I have recently acknowledged a new obsession: photographing bird in flight. Actually, watching birds fly too. For example, I pointed out a bird flying in the sky and how pretty it was. The friend I was with looked at me like I was crazy and said: “yes, that is a bird flying in the sky.” It’s strange because I’ve never considered this before as something terribly interesting. Or interesting at all.
But I digress….
The new thrill is photographing them with my Holga and then waiting to see if anything came out (because the Holga camera uses film and the camera itself is unpredictable). I’m not using the term “thrill” lightly, either. I’ve noticed that there’s some squealing with glee when I do this. I don’t know why it’s happened to me, really. It’s reckless and unpredictable because I try to get as close to the birds as I can before the take off. So it happens quickly and I am really not entirely sure where, or if, the bird will end up in the frame. This might be a waste of film, we’ll see. But hopefully it will result in some spooky and weird.
Here’s a few from when I was at the La Jolla Cove in California last weekend.
these are lovely.
Thanks Maury!!
You know, we could have gotten yelled at for startling these beauties–everything is protected out here! But…anything for your obsession!
i like the last one a lot–great silhouette.
Man, those “this post has been removed by the author” notifications are so intense!
Love those!>>The bird is my signature animal, in case you didn’t know…
Oh wow! Love these!
It is always inspiring to see a photographers personal work. It says so much about their love for seeing. >So wonderful that you shared these. Thank you!
I love those photos, I find birds beautiful, the idea of the freedom they have. And also the structure and their feathers.
